Examples of Negotiation Techniques
- Here are several examples of how a salary negotiation might unfold. A successful approach is to ask for things as a question rather than a demand.
- Organization: "We would like to offer you a salary of $25,000 per year."
- Alternative #1: "I am delighted that you are interested in me and I am very interested in the position. Based upon my experience and also because a variety of expenses I will have when I graduate, such as paying off my student loan and needing to buy a car, I would like to be making around $30,000. How do feel about that?"
- Alternative #2: "I am truly impressed with your organization and I know that I could contribute to your team, but I have several other opportunities that are in the $30,000 range (do not say this unless it is true). Is there a way we could work this out?"
- Alternative #3: "I am out of school now and on my own and really need $30,000 as a minimum. Is there a way we can work that out? I feel this position is a good fit for me and would really enjoy working here if I can get that number. What do you think?"
- Try to mention a positive or reinforcing statement about liking the organization and position prior to asking for other things. In essence, you are saying to the employer that you appreciate the offer and are ready to join their team if you can get one last thing to make the offer perfect.
