What is Graduate School All About?

How do I know if Graduate School is right for me?

Deciding to go to graduate school should not be taken lightly. This is a big decision. Graduate school is time consuming, and costly both monetarily and in terms of the energy and the involvement necessary to complete a graduate level program. You may want to explore your career goals and what you hope to gain from the graduate level experience before taking the plunge. Going to graduate school in order to procrastinate in the career decision making process is not a good alternative. You may want to take time to gain experience or explore different career options with Career Services.

Some important questions to ask yourself may include:

What are my career goals and objectives?

  • Are my goals realistic?
  • What do I hope to gain from the graduate degree I am pursuing?
  • What level of experience and/or degree program is necessary for the career I am pursuing?
  • Would it be better for me to gain some professional experience before attending graduate school?
  • Have I researched all the possible avenues to reach my career goals?
  • Have I tapped all my informational resources?
  • Am I willing to sacrifice time, money, and energy right now to embark in a comprehensive graduate program?
  • Do I need to take time off (are you burnt out) before attending graduate school?
  • How can my professors or career service office help ease my decision making process?
  • How will a graduate degree affect my employment options and earning power?
